True to its vision of "reduce, recycle, reuse," Wissahickon Charter has transformed 54,000 square feet of the former Atwater Kent radio factory on an industrial stretch of Wissahickon Avenue into a dynamic showcase of environmental education and stewardship. Features include:
- "Green" projects woven into student curricula - rooftop solar panels, a biodiesel manufacturing system, and a schoolyard storm water management basin/garden.
- A tile "river" winding through the central hall, adorned with student projects and windows of varying height that brighten classrooms and encourage transparent learning.
- A library, gymnasium, dedicated music and art rooms, Peace Center for conflict resolution, and Campaign leadership team Discovery" room for hands-on nature projects.
- A service-learning community garden that students cultivate with local residents.
- A front facade and exterior adorned with a 3D nature mural, garden beds and eco-friendly benches.
Wissahickon Charter is raising funds to purchase its facility as a permanent home. The school intends to secure the building for future students and families committed to high-quality education in Philadelphia.
Ownership will enable Wissahickon Charter to enrich the academic environment for faculty and students and reduce operating expenses.
The school holds a long-term property lease with an option for purchase in April 2012 through a $1,000,000 down payment. Beyond institutionalizing this civic resource, campus ownership will provide leverage by serving as collateral for future credit and financing needs.
