Immunizations
For the school year 2007/2008 there are changes in the state laws about the immunizations required for school children. All students in all grades must now have two varicella (chicken pox) shots, as well as those required in the past. The varicella shots are not required for children that had the chicken pox. Required immunizations are: at least four DTaP (diptheria, tetanus, and pertussis). The last one must be given on or after the fourth birthday. Each child must also have three polio, three hepatitis B, and 2 MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) shots. These immunizations are absolutely necessary or your child will be excluded from school. Physical and Dental Examinations Upon entry to school in kindergarten or first grade, a physical and a dental examination form must be presented to the school. When transferring to a new school, new exams are required for the new school. These exams must have been completed within the year prior to enrollment. (For instance, if you enter school in September of 2007, the exam must be dated after September of 2006.) To assure the health needs of all school children, physical and dental exams need to be updated periodically. Dental exams are required again in third and seventh grades. Physical exams are required again in sixth grade. Medicines at School Medicines may be given at school by the nurse. Whether it is a prescription medicine (such as albuterol) or an over-the-counter medicine (such as Benadryl), the nurse must have a prescription from the doctor to give the medicine. The medicine needs to be presented in it’s original box or vial. Contacting the Nurse The nurse, Florence Buckley, is available each school day from 8:30am to 3:00pm. Feel free to drop by the office at any time, or call her at 267-338-1020 ext.127, or send an e-mail to nurse@wissahickoncharter.org. |
